Overview

Portable Diagnostic Systems (PDS) develops rapid, saliva-based drug testing technology for law enforcement and first responders, bringing laboratory-style screening closer to the roadside. Its Integrity-1 system combines microfluidics, antibody engineering, and salivary diagnostics in a compact handheld platform designed to rapidly identify drugs from a small saliva sample. Spatial Dynamics was brought in to turn the underlying technology into a field-ready product. I led the industrial design of the enclosure and supported the launch across web, print, and conference materials.

The form

The wedge shape came from the fact that an angled screen is comfortable to read whether the device is in your hands or sitting on a table, and the internals packed naturally into that volume. Also, the cartridge slot placement makes it feel obvious where the test goes. The whole thing is about the size of a restaurant card reader, and it had to be durable, light, and easy to hold for an officer using it on a roadside.

Launch

Since PDS was heading into their launch, Spatial Dynamics also created the website and produced all the marketing material necessary for the launch.

PDS took the prototype to the TechCrunch Disrupt 2023 Startup Battlefield stage, and the pilots ran with law enforcement. The website and launch materials are still in use today.
